TO MRS. JANET DEWART BELL AND FAMILY:

On behalf of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), I extend my sincere condolences to you on the passing of your husband and loved one, Mr. Derrick Albert Bell, Ir.

It is with much sorrow we endure the loss of those we love; those with whom we have shared and shaped our lives. I hope many cherished memories will bring added comfort and joy for you.

For me this one is harder than many because of the friendship shared between Mr. Bell and Lia’s parents, as well as the deep influence his writing and activism had on us personally. Our hearts are filled with sadness but also with immense gratitude.

Mr. Bell held and demonstrated an uncompromising loyalty to his convictions toward civil rights. Relinquishing position and title to advance the cause of justice and equality was not uncommon for him, and yet he garnered distinction as a teacher, scholar, writer, as a civil rights attorney and champion; admired and respected by individuals from all walks oflife.

Throughout the NAACP, we remember and are grateful for Mr. Derrick Bell; for his choice of membership over position; for his work as assistant counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund from 1960 to 1966; for his leadership example. His legacy will live on, and his name honored, by those who were inspired to continue the work he began.

You are in our thoughts and prayers. We pray that God’s grace will strengthen you and His peace will keep you today and in the days ahead.

With deepest sympathy,
Benjamin Todd Jealous
